Edmund Taylor Whittaker

Edmund Whittaker graduated from Cambridge and stayed on with a fellowship. He became Royal Astronomer of Ireland and moved to Dublin before being appointed to the Chair of Mathematics at Edinburgh where he spent the rest of his career. His best known work is in analysis, in particular numerical analysis, but he also worked on celestial mechanics and the history of applied mathematics and physics. He became President of the EMS in 1914 and an honorary member in 1937. | |||||||||||||||||||||
