Association for Turkish Women in Mathematics

Association for Turkish Women in Mathematics

The Association for Turkish Women in Mathematics was founded in June 2012. Its aims were as follows:
(i) To offer scientific and social support for women in Turkey who work as mathematicians.

(ii) To encourage women to study mathematics.

(iii) To offer support to women mathematicians for career development.

(iv) To provide a common working environment for academicians who work in similar areas.

(v) To organize scientific communication between women mathematicians.

(vi) To organize scientific activities such as workshops, symposia and summer schools.

(vii) To create opportunities for women mathematicians to facilitate the advancement of their careers by cooperating with similar associations in the U.S.A. and Europe.

The first general meeting of the Association was held in Çorum. It has organised workshops in various cities in Turkey with the main topics being different at each workshop. We list these workshops below:
1. Workshop of Women Mathematicians I:
The first workshop of women mathematicians was held during from 2 May to 4 May 2014 at the Gebze Institute of Technology in Gebze, Kocaeli. The main themes of the workshop were Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, Graph Theory and Numerical Analysis. There were three talks in each area; one general talk given by a senior woman mathematician, following two talks given by young women mathematicians. There were also poster presentations, mostly done by graduate students. The 150 participants included undergraduates and senior mathematicians, most of whom were women but there were also some men.

2. Workshop of Women Mathematicians II:
The second workshop of women mathematicians was held during 1 May to 3 May 2015 at Cumhuriyet University in Sivas. The main themes of the workshop were Algebra, Analysis and Applied Mathematics. There were main talks in each area and short talks given by mainly young women mathematicians. The 120 participants included undergraduates and senior mathematicians, most of whom were women but there were also some men. This workshop was also supported by European Women In Mathematics.

3. Workshop of Women Mathematicians III:
The third annual Workshop of Association for Turkish Women in Mathematics took place from 27 May to 29 May 2016 at Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Turkey. The main themes of the workshop were Topology, Number Theory and Applied Mathematics. The 140 participants included undergraduates and senior mathematicians, most of whom were women but there were also some men. This workshop was also supported by European Women In Mathematics.

4. Workshop of Women Mathematicians IV:
The fourth annual Workshop of Association for Turkish Women in Mathematics took place from 28 April to 29 April 2017 at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. The main themes of the workshop were Algebra/Model Theory, Applied mathematics/Financial Mathematics and Algebraic topology. This workshop was also supported by European Women In Mathematics.

The Association has also organised summer schools for graduate students.
1. First Graduate Summer School of Association for Turkish Women in Mathematics:
The first summer school for graduate students took place from 20 June to 1 July 2016 at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara. The summer school program consisted of a total of 46 lesson hours, 40 of these being theoretical and 6 being tutorial hours. Each lesson lasted 50 minutes. The two topics of this summer school were Algebra and Algebraic Topology. The courses were taught in Turkish but the written materials were in English. The Algebra course consisted of: Introduction to Group Theory; Introduction to Representations of Finite Groups; Non-commutative ring theory and Leavitt path algebras. The Algebraic Topology course consisted of: Fundamental Group, Covering Spaces, Singular Homology; Cellular Homology, Applications of Homology, Cohomology Groups, Cup product, Poincare Duality.

2. Second Graduate Summer School of Association for Turkish Women in Mathematics:
The second summer school for graduate students took place from 13 June to 22 June 2017 at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara. The topics of this graduate school were Riemannian Geometry and Complex Analysis.

In addition the Association organised the conference 'Women and Mathematics: Algebras', on 11 March 2017 at the Istanbul Centre for Mathematical Sciences. This meeting focused on Group Algebras, Commutative Algebra and Representation Theory.
