  1. Walk Around Paris
    • At the end of that year, in 1828, he decided to study by himself for the competitive exam to enter Ecole Polytechnique, which he failed.
    • He also focused on his own research, publishing in Annales de mathematiques pures et appliquees and submitting his work to Cauchy, who was teaching at Ecole Polytechnique at that time.
    • He later went to Ecole Normale Superieure.
    • Ecole Polytechnique .
    • The aim of this new establishment was to replace all those schools, but they were later reopened and it was decided that students would have to attend Polytechnique prior to entering those schools.
    • Therefore Polytechnique focused on general knowledge and the theoretical parts, whereas the engineering schools focused on the practical side and specialisation.
    • Since then, the reputation of the school has continued to rise and marks the social elevation of its students, and Franc'ois Crouzet, a French historian believes that the students from Polytechnique have had a significant economical effect in France in the 19th Century.
    • Some of the very prominent students of Polytechnique were: .
    • He was also a professor at Polytechnique later on.
    • Prominent professors also taught at Polytechnique, such as: .
    • Joseph-Louis Lagrange, who was the first analysis professor at Polytechnique.
    • On 25th October 1795, the abbaye was replaced by a school: ecole centrale du Pantheon, which changed names many time due again to the political context and obtained its final nowadays name is 1870.
    • Ecole Normale Superieure .
    • The Ecole Normale superieure was created in 1794 and the first inaugural lecture was given on the 20th January 1795 .
    • The male students at the Ecole had a very dense syllabus to go through, so scientists like Monge, Vandermonde, Daubenton and Berthollet and writers and philosophers like Bernardin de Saint-Pierre and Volney were brought there to teach them.
    • In 1903, the Ecole Normale Superieure was united with the Universite de Paris, until in 1953 it gained financial autonomy and personality.
    • The school nowadays results from the combination of Ecole Normale Superieure and l'Ecole Normale Superieure for young women.
    • Ecole Normale Superieure has ten Fields Medallists, which makes it the second most prolific institution after Princeton: .
    • The most notorious "mathematician" who came from the Ecole, is Nicolas Bourbaki, an imaginary mathematician, composed of Andre Weil, Jean Delsarte, Henri Cartan, Jean Coulomb, Rene de Possel, Jean Dieudonne, Charles Ehresmann, Claude Chevalley and Szolem Mandelbrojt, all alumni from the school, except Mandelbrojt.

Vers la fin de sa carriere scientifique, cet excellent Maitre me fit l'honneur et l'amitie de me designer comme son suppleant : j'ai fait, en cette qualite, une lecon.

  4. Dubreil-Jacotin on Sophie Germain
    • Her knowledge was already quite extensive in 1794 when the Ecole Polytechnique was founded; she was then able to obtain the notes of Lagrange's course and studied them with profit.
    • She wished to submit them to her master Lagrange and decided to write him; but, as she confessed much later, fearing the "ridicule attached to the name of femme savante," she signed her letter "Le Blanc, pupil at the Ecole Polytechnique." But Lagrange wanted to meet the Polytechnic student with such interesting observations.

  5. History in mathematical education
    • The establishment of the Ecole Polytechnique and the reforming of the Ecole Normale in Paris in 1795 were particularly important 'pace-setters' in educational practice for science throughout Europe, and the writing of textbooks based on courses at such institutions became a standard procedure.
    • For example, at the Ecole Polytechnique around 1818 students were up for prayers at 5.30 a.m.

  6. Hermite's works
    • In 1856 Hermite had been admitted to the Institute, and six years later a chair was created for him at the Ecole Normale.
    • As we all know he was afterwards appointed through the influence of Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) to the Ecole Polytechnique, and eventually, in 1869, succeeded Jean-Marie Duhamel as Professor of Analysis at the Sorbonne.
    • For instance, in a speech on the occasion of his Jubilee, he classed together the two great schools - the Ecole Normale and the Ecole Polytechnique - as two branches of the same family, inseparably united by the common sense of justice and duty - a sense which, in some way which we cannot fathom, is intimately connected with the science of mathematics, and seems to pass from the intellect to the consciousness, upon which it is imposed with all the force of the truths of Geometry.
